I hadn’t. I went through life not even knowing I had an inner child. After all, my children are in their thirties, I have two lovely granddaughters and I’m a professional woman and entrepreneur; seems grown up to me!
In 2010, I made a decision to enroll in an 8-week EFT Tapping course focused on tapping into wealth, unaware of how many emotional mountains I would have to climb. But climb I did, totally unprepared for the vulnerability it would require to face such deeply rooted feelings that shook me to my core.
My instructor, Sharla, assured me that using EFT Tapping combined with visualization would be an important technique to bring me back to my childhood experiences around money. She was right.
As we tapped, Sharla had me gently tune into my younger self to establish the root cause of my money blocks. Just a few simple questions was all it took.
Q: “How old were you the first time you remember your parents discussing money?”
A: ‘Six years old.’
Q: “What were you wearing?” A: ‘Shorts and a striped jersey top.’
Q: “Who was in the room?” A: ‘My Mom and Dad at the small kitchen table.’
Q: “How did you feel?” A: ‘Scared that there wasn’t going to be enough money to pay the bills.’
Q: “What did you learn about people who have more money than your family?”
A: ‘They’re bad and greedy.’
These were the beliefs that I had held in my body for over 50 years.
She then asked me to fast forward to my adult life as a successful business woman. Imagining myself walking out onto a stage, ready to present the largest and most lucrative ad campaign of my entire advertising career.
I quickly scanned the audience and there were my parents in the front row. Then I saw my entire family, my friends, colleagues and the press in a packed house.
For a split second, I thought, ‘this is my moment!’
But something pulled me back. What was happening?
I turned to look backstage and saw a little six-year old girl in the most beautiful dress she could ever imagine.
I met my inner child.
She looked terrified. So scared that her parents won’t accept her if she’s successful and has money. What if they think I’m bad and greedy? It was my inner child’s job to protect me.
She motioned to me to leave the stage. I knew what to do. I held out my hand as an invitation to join me on stage. She reluctantly moved across the stage step by step until she was at my side looking up with fearful tears in her eyes. I picked her up into my arms and held her close as my Dad rose to his feet and applauded bringing the entire audience to their feet.
A lifetime of limiting beliefs about success and how it relates to money dissolved from my being.
For the first time in my life, I was able to feel the pride and acceptance of my parents around money and had healed my inner child’s fears. She no longer had to hold me back to keep me safe. I felt a wholeness through the tears as I stood on stage looking out over the audience.
The power of acceptance as we let go of limiting beliefs is truly life-changing.
